Frequently Asked Questions

On average we return finished, edited, colour corrected images back to the customer within a week of the product being in studio.

We come from 15 years in a marketing and advertising background and fully understand print and media deadlines so we’re more than happy to work with you to cater for urgent or same day requirements when deadlines are tight.

Absolutely, if what you’re after is outside the scope of the information listed on this website feel free to phone or email us. To give you an idea our by the hour photography rate is usually $96 and our re-touching rate is $76 per hour for basic clearcut / white background retouching or $96 for full or advanced editing.
Where the shoot permits we generally use what’s called a tilt shift lens for product photography. These are highly specialised and very expensive lenses that offer a similar workflow to the old view cameras.

Using tilt shift lenses lets us precisely control where the focal plane is on your product and also allows us to virtually eliminate issues with bending converging lines you will get on most other types of lenses.

Unless you have a specific requirement we generally shoot in RAW at 36 megapixels. From this we can generate virtually any format and sizing that you require. Most customers will take the final images in both JPG and TIF formats to suit both website and print. But in saying that we can shoot up to 100 megapixels depending on your exact requirement.
We are currently working on getting setup with Barter Card to accept payments. If this is your preferred payment method, please let us know.

What locations in New Zealand do you service?

What if I require manufacturers logos or marks removed?

Easy! Digital retouching in this day and age is truly amazing. There is virtually nothing we can’t achieve in post production. Just make sure you let us know up front if you have any requirements like this as it may affect the way we shoot the RAW images.

The only reason is because product photography is all we do, so we have an ultra efficient workflow and studio setup catered for doing nothing but fast turn around product photography. We use all the same industry leading equipment but have much more efficient workflows. Our overheads are also much lower as we don’t require the large portrait studios that many photographers have and also don’t need to invest in portable setups for doing things such as weddings that many photographers specialise in.
We actually get asked this all the time and providing your trade is something we use, then it quite often isn’t a problem to do 50% trade. We judge this on a case-by-case basis, so it’s worth asking at least.
Pricing will depend on the work required, but as a ballpark you can work on $149 per hour for photography and then $96 per hour for basic re-touching and studio work or $96 per hour for advanced retouching or post production of on-site photography, both exclusive of GST.
We use fifteen different studios depending on the nature of the work required and what specialist photographer is handling the job. Generally we shoot in Auckland City, Hamilton and have a very popular residential location in Franklin for smalls, high value and food photography. This is our favourite location due to the fit-out, climate control and being setup with our very best equipment.
Yes, our vehicle photographer is one of the best in the country, shooting on medium format equipment with a full infinity cove studio. The vehicle photos we produce are some of the best.
Absolutely not. Once paid for, all images supplied to you are 100% yours to do what you like with, for as long as you like. We only retain the right to withhold copyright if you don’t pay your bill. We also have a fair use clause where you allow us to use your images on this website in our portfolio section.
You can, but the result you will get is going to look like something on Ebay or Trademe, every single time, guaranteed.

It’s an entire photography lesson in itself, but there are three fundamental issues you will have. The first is the sensor in your point and shoot or even consumer level DSLR is designed for family snapshots at the best. The sensors in professional equipment are either what’s called full frame or medium format. These are truly in a league of their own, which is why the camera manufacturers can get away with charging 20 or even 30 percent more for this type of equipment.

The second issue is around lenses. While the lens in your point and shoot or consumer grade DSLR appears to provide outstanding photos, the difference when stacked next to a $5000 or $7000 professional lens will be obvious even to an untrained eye. Professional glass is clean, clear and incredibly fast compared to what you’re used to using.

The final issue is going to be around lighting. Lighting product photography is an art in itself. Even in our basic shoots we are using between 4 and 8 individual light sources to achieve the sort of professional photos you see in magazines. Unfortunately your onboard flash really won’t cut it in this area.

The easiest way to prove all of this is to take some photos of your product yourself first, then send it to us and compare the differences. If what we produce isn’t miles apart form your consumer equipment snaps then we wont charge you, simple!

Absolutely. Shoots of this size are actually quite common for large retail and manufacturing outlets. For large jobs like this we will assign you a dedicated project manager to ensure the process runs smoothly and all your expectations are met.

For shoots of this size any pricing on this website should be ignored as we have full day studio rates that are far more economical for large batch shoots.

Yes for sure! We have dedicated a large area in our studio just for this, storing customers products for alternate or future shots. We don’t charge anything for product storage or small and medium sized products.
For the majority of our in-house studio shoots our preferred body is the full frame Nikon D810 or the Nikon D4. These are truly outstanding 36 megapixel bodies with colour rendition that you just can’t believe.

For large scale shoots for vehicles and extremely large objects, our vehicle photographer uses a medium format Hasselblad setup, the same brand camera that NASA sent to the moon!

One complete setup is around $20,000 the other $50,000 so either way you are talking some serious equipment designed from the ground up for nothing except awesome quality images.

Don’t worry, we have thousands of hours experience in re-touching, correcting and photo manipulation. While it’s important we don’t mislead your customer on the product they are purchasing, there are still hundreds of ways we can really make your product images stand out amongst your competition.
Absolutely. Our MAC operator is one of the best and has years of experience working with advertising agencies producing top class creative. Get in touch if you require a quote for full graphic design, typesetting, video editing or any other creative work.
Generally we require payment within 2 weeks of the photoshoot taking place or before you use or display the images publicly. For large shoots or small businesses we are happy to discuss other options that might work better for you.
Absolutely, we love sharing our skills and knowledge with other up coming photographers. Email us if you want to look at options for some one-on-one training or otherwise checkout some of our photography articles here.
Yes, absolutely, we do this all the time. You just provide the contact information and we will liaise with anyone you require.
Yes we have three studios that we can organize to be leased out on an daily basis. These get busy so it’s best to let us know as much in advance as you can and we can shift around shoots to suit your schedule if need be. You can view our Auckland Studio Hire page here.

Only the best! Our studio uses all Profoto strobes for all our product photography. We have experimented with different brands in the past but always came back to the industry leader Profoto for all our strobes.

If you are not familiar with Profoto, essentially they are the market leader in light shaping technology. Used by virtually every award winning photographer and studio in the world, their products are simply miles apart from even their closest competitor.

On average each studio we operate in is fitted out with about $100k worth of Profoto lighting. Trust us when we say you shouldnt settle for cometitors offering anything less.

Absolutely. Some of this work is available on our website to view, but due to the nature of FMCG and retail a lot of this is commercially sensitive either indefinitely or until the products have launched or so we ask that you sign a formal NDA before being allowed access to our full portfolio.
Absolutely, we love nothing more than supporting local businesses! So if you can’t trade us something for your photos then we will give you a flat 50% discount on our prices listed on the website. At that rate we make nothing on this work but get to feel good seeing some of our local businesses using world class imagery.
